NGC Global Project: Foundation for People with Disabilities
The Hunter NGC team started 4 years ago and each year the team continues to grow in size and awareness of global issues.
Why the Foundation for People with Disabilities?
"We were just very interested since Ecuador is not a place that receives a lot of attention in the media today. Quite frankly, [the media is] centered towards places like Darfur and other high-profile places, and we just wanted to pick a less commonly helped location."
Team leader Charlen Wang is especially compelled every year to continue supporting the Foundation, "One of the things I found out is that in Pedernales, Ecuador 90% of the disabled population comes from impoverished families and most of them can't get the professional care they need. After reading the NGC Team Binder we looked through the other issues and one of the things that stuck out to us was extreme poverty and hunger issues; it mentions that poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor, so it directly relates to the issue we are supporting right now."
Team Activities
Thanksgiving Day Luncheon - The Hunter Team sold plates of traditional Thanksgiving Day foods for $5.00 each as an alternative to that day's lunch option. The Hunter Team created and handed out educational pamphlets describing their NGC team and the Foundation. The event was a great success! The team raised over $200, strengthened team morale and a sense of community, and provided awareness to their fellow students about the Foundation.
Future Events
Advocating on behalf of the Foundation to local government officials and an End of the Year Carnival.
What message does Hunter NGC have for the Foundation for People with Disabilities?
"I want them to know that we are very single-minded and determined to furthering their cause and helping children with disabilities. We're very passionate about our cause... We genuinely want to help them, and we want to make sure that they know that... we will continue supporting them as much as we can in every way possible." - Hunter Team Member.
