Dan & Barbara Brimhall, parents of Lucy Brimhall, NGC Alumni

Lucy has always enjoyed being involved and investigating new avenues in her life, but none have brought her as much personal growth as New Global Citizens.

It started with her learning what the concept of development meant, and then exploring the ideas of grassroots, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity.  It continued as she worked with her team with a newfound understanding that she has a responsibility to share her life and her resources.  She realized she could combine her talents with the know-how and ingenuity of people in impoverished situations, and that’s how the movement would go forward.  NGC taught her the concepts of fundraising, the idea and different methods of advocacy, and the importance of community education.

As Lucy would say, “NGC has taught me to care.  I learned that people have dignity, hopes and dreams, determination and work ethics.  They are just like me, but in a different geographical location, and born into a different situation.”

Being a part of NGC opened Lucy’s eyes in a way that no classroom setting could offer.  NGC taught her to look and see what is happening around her; it caused her to believe more deeply in her goodness and her abilities to effect good.  She has gained an irreplaceable passion to make a difference.  Thank you, NGC!

Mary Beth Sabbagh, parent of New Global Citizen Team Leader

After the first year of New Global Citizens inception, I remember hearing a student from the local high school talk about their experience working on their project and his words stuck in my mind.  He said, “This is the first time we felt our voices were heard and that people realized our opinions were worth listening to. We realized teenagers can make a difference.”

My daughter started a team at her school in 2009 and the experience for my daughter has been incredible in two ways.  One, she focused on world concerns and how different the needs can be depending on your gender, geography, and your country’s economic priorities. Two, she established leadership skills by developing a team at her junior high school and educating the team, not only on what New Global Citizens was all about, but also the sponsor projects throughout the world. My daughter is rather shy, but she was committed to helping. And to see her “break out of her shell” in order to make a difference, was inspiring. I am not sure she would have had that chance, if it were not for New Global Citizens.

When I was growing up, a word commonly used to describe teenagers was 'apathetic'.  Thanks to the internet, news media, and the advancement of technology, teenagers in the 21st century are more culturally aware advocates and activists.  They can and do make a difference and in doing so, brighten all of our futures through being involved with programs like New Global Citizens.

Ali Lalani, parent of NGC Student

The passion and the enthusiasm with which our daughter Sarah has embraced the mission of New Global Citizens is remarkable. Over the years, Sarah has spent considerable amount of time in community service and leadership activities. She has seen this organization evolve into what it is today, providing youth many opportunities to make a positive impact. NGC has played an important role in Sarah's growth in raising awareness of global Issues and the need to act locally. It provided her with a platform to pursue her interests and helped guide her in the right direction so she could take action.

Arlene Blum, Parent of New Global Citizens Alumnus, Annalise Blum

My daughter Annalise had always wanted to help make the world a better place and made efforts on her own throughout her childhood. New Global Citizens gave her the information, skills, and support to follow through and make a difference for others.  I remember her returning from her first day so delighted to have met kindred spirits and bubbling over with ideas for projects for her and her friends. Thanks so very much  for helping foster in my daughter her care for the planet and making it a more just and healthier place for all.  She is indeed part of a generation of New Global Citizens that will solve the big problems confronting us. Her experience with NGC was a big contribution.
