Who is most affected by natural disasters?When a natural disaster strikes, all people suffer, but it has been shown over and over again that the poorest people suffer the most. Compared to other sectors of the population, people living in poverty are more likely to live in flood plains, alongside river banks, on steep slopes and on unsteady land. These areas are more dangerous and therefore less desirable; anyone who can afford to chooses to live elsewhere.Additionally, many poor countries have underdeveloped infrastructure and lack basic public services, which leaves them less able to endure natural disasters or to respond adequately when one occurs.
