School Name: Leland High School
Project: Mobile Toy Library In Partnership With: This project focuses on the slums of India where children are working all day in labor intensive jobs or prostitution. The project brings education to the children and offers opportunities to find a healthier way of living. Toys and books are donated, stored as a library in vans, and then brought directly to where the children work. The club officers narrowed down the list of possible projects through considering our fellow students and their response to certain social issues. We noticed how students were, as bad as it may sound, tired of hearing about AIDS in Africa. We also thought about the meaning of this club and how it is not meant to just help one part of the world and ignore other issues, thus we avoided any project that focused on AIDS or Africa. After narrowing down the projects into three choices, we did a bit more research on the projects with Amanda's help and gave presentations on all three during our club retreat. At the retreat, people voted for which project they felt our community would respond best to: Mobile Toy Library. This project is picked by the students of the school and it connects with many people in our community, especially since the Indian population is rising dramatically. We have people come from areas close to where the project is targeted living right in our community. Not to mention, we are lucky enough to work with Amanda, who is already very involved in this project. From our resources, this project offers so many new opportunities to educate, advocate, and fundraise in a manner that the community has never experienced before.
Club Coordinators: Goals:Community EducationWe plan to reach 800 people through our events. AdvocacyWe will be advocating social change and youth involvement through media exposure, writing letters to our government representatives, and encouraging community involvement. Through the school newspaper, the Almaden Times, and the Mercury News, media exposure will be key in spreading awareness. At every event we will have protest signings and letter writing opportunities. The club will also host events that will be open to the entire community so that the people of Almaden Valley can work together in promoting social change. FundraisingWe hope to raise $4,00 by the end of our project. Upcoming Events:
