Rama Sesana Foundation makes health care for women in the Bali area of Indonesia accessible. Rama Sesana Foundation runs health clinics in local markets, where most women go to buy food or as vendors
Rama Sesana Foundation Program
Askoha Fellow, Luh Putu Upadisari, recognized the need to address reproductive and health issues of women and mothers. Rather than have the women come to her for services she created Rama Sesana Foundation to bring a health clinic to them.
Many women in Indonesia work as market vendors and laborers. Creating a heath clinic in the market, makes health care accessible. The clinic also sends outreach workers that speak with market vendors, laborers, and shoppers at all hours of the day, distributing healthy living pamphlets and referring the
women to visit the clinic.
Every month the clinic receives about 400 patient visits. Patients are asked to only pay what they can afford for tests and medicines.
Why the need?
Many women work all hours of the day in the market to earn very little pay. Women unable to make enough wages through their shops often use transactional sex as a means of income and often contract an array of diseases. These women often neglect visiting a doctor due to lack of funds and their need to work long hours to pay for food and shelter for their families.
With the Rama Sesana Foundation health clinics, women can come for exams, medication, and education on sexual and reproductive issues at affordable prices. Opening the clinic in the market where the women spend most of their time allows the clinic to access many more women and improve their health situations. These women often have limited to no access to transportation making it very difficult for them to ever be able to travel to see a doctor.
How Team Efforts Translates to Impact
100% of funds raised support the expansion of more health clinics in marketplaces across the Bali area to reach more women.
Funds will support the hire of more outreach workers to allow more women to receive health care information and to refer them to the clinics for more thorough check ups and exams if necessary.
How Rama Sesana Foundation Creates Sustainable Global Change
Rama Sesana Foundation provides health care and education to girls and women in the marketplace and employs local workers and volunteers to serve as outreach workers to further educate and reach more women.
