Kalinga Mission for Indigenous Children and Youth Development (KAMICYDI)

Philippines

Global Fund for Children

Kalinga Mission for Indigenous Children (KAMICYDI) started from a student movement to defend the land and environment of indigenous Kalinga communities. Kalinga uses traditional techniques to address impacts of poverty and environmental degradation.

KAMICYDI Programs

KAMICYDI combines advocacy and activism with the economic needs of the Kalinga communities.

  • Sustainable Indigenous Peoples Agricultural Technology program – utilizes traditional techniques to increase food production, benefiting mainly women and children.
  • The Young Entrepreneurship Skills (YES) – program provides development opportunities to both in-school and out-of-school youth. Through workshops and trainings students learn skills in entrepreneurship and business development.

Why the need?

Kalinga, a province in the northern Philippines, is home to the Kalingas, a tribal group that relies primarily on subsistence agriculture. According to the 2005 Nation Human Development Report, Kalinga Province has one of the lowest life expectancies in the country and only 42% of the province’s population graduate from high school. As a result, there is a large number of out-of-school youth in the region, leading to a high incidence of drug use and criminal activities. Lack of education, compounded by poverty, illiteracy, and tribal wars that still affect the area, mean that Kalinga youth have few opportunities to improve their lives.

How Team Efforts Translate to Impact

All funds raised will support KAMICYDI's Young Entrepreneurship Skills (YES) Program.

How KAMICYDI Creates Sustainable Global Change

By implementing indigenous methods for environmental preservation, Kalinga Mission is utilizing the local people, resources, and techniques that have historically been used. This will ultimately lead to both cultural and environmental sustainability for indigenous Kalinga communities in northern Philippines.
