Sunshine Charity
Sri Lanka
The Sunshine Charity provides care for families and children affected by the 2004 tsunami and armed conflict by providing short and long term aid.
Sunshine Charity Programs
The Sunshine Charity runs a childcare center for 35 young
children who have been affected by the tsunami and armed conflict. The
childcare center provides children a place for school, access to
childcare, meals, and therapy to cope with the devastating reality of
the tsunami. A majority of the children are orphaned,
having lost one or both of their parents from the tsunami or armed
conflict. Before coming to the daycare these children were living in
relief camps without any familiar family or friends, proper health care,
or nutrition.
Why the need?
The Indian Ocean tsunami in December of 2004 left a devastating wake for the people of South Asia, particularly those in Sri Lanka. The disaster caused numerous deaths, left many missing, and displaced families across the region. Over 30,000 deaths were reported, over 5,000 people remain missing, and over 1 million people were displaced, without a home of their own. Shortly after the tsunami relief funding became scarce and many aid relief organizations left the region.
Many of the children at Sunshine Charity have come from Tamil communities, a minority group displaced and affected deeply by the tsunami or armed conflict. These children have been living in temporary shelters since the tsunami. These shelters offer little to no health care and food and lack educational opportunities for children.
How Team Efforts Translate to Impact
All funds raised will support Sunshine Charity's childcare center, which provides learning facilities, childcare, nutritious meals, and creative and interactive workshops to highly vulnerable children ages 2 to 8 affected by the 2004 tsunami or issues of armed conflict. Funds will support salaries for teachers, daily lunches, and educational activities.
How Sunshine Charity Creates Sustainable Global Change
Shortly following the 2004 tsunami, many aid organizations left while the affects from the disaster continued. Sunshine Charity works to provide short and long term aid to children and families affected by the tsunami and armed conflict by offering schooling, childcare, meals, and workshops to cope and heal with the aftermath of the disaster.
