What is a New Global Citizen?

How a new global citizen THINKS:

Globally – Understands, accepts, and truly becomes an active citizen of the world. An NGCitizen thinks in a way that transcends borders and is dedicated to solving the world's greatest challenges, regardless of geography.

Locally – Uncovers the expertise that is unique to every community across the globe and supports those local experts in their solutions to local problems.  In the same way, an NGCitizen is an expert on and in their own community, one who knows best how to raise awareness, generate resources, and mobilize support for change.

In the World's Greatest Challenges Framework – Plugs into the framework of the World's Greatest Challenges, which include the Millennium Development Goals accepted by over 192 nations.  Understands that our greatest global challenges don't exist in isolation but are instead interconnected and complex.  An NGCitizen recognizes that to take action on one improves the chances for success of all others, while neglecting any major global challenge has a negative effect throughout.

About Sustainable Change – Knows that thoughtful philanthropy is critical to long-term change. With the knowledge that the traditional approach to giving does not usually result in sustainable impact, an NGCitizen supports organizations that empower local people to create change in their own communities.

How a new global citizen ACTS:

With Impact in Mind – An NGCitizen takes action because change requires effort, planning, innovation, and teamwork to achieve two types of impact:  first within oneself and second within one's local and global communities. 

In Collaboration – Lasting change does not come from any one individual alone.  The NGCitizen forms and values a team, bringing partners and resources together in a united effort.  

As an Empowered Individual – Educates others, realizing that change requires the awareness and passions of an informed and mobilized community.  Advocates, engaging leaders in the change process.  Fundraises, understanding the power of dollars and resources when in the hands of grassroots social entrepreneurs.

Grows the Movement – Uses voice, action, energy and thought to engage others in the growing movement of NGCitizens now and throughout one's life.

How a new global citizen FEELS:

Passionate – Inspired by others to create a better and more sustainable future for all. An NGCitizen is energetic, bold, excited, and is willing to shatter the status quo and take on the world's greatest challenges. 

Responsible – As a global citizen and member of the most powerful generation in the history of humanity, an NGCitzen accepts and understands their responsibility for being part of a global solution and seeing the end of poverty.  Believes the world's greatest challenges to be their own greatest challenges.

Respectful – Acknowledges the limits of their own experience and values the experience and perspective of grassroots leadership around the world.  Remains humble despite their bold vision for global change.
