Agri-Forest Agents Program
The Agri-Forest Agents' educational programs train the lcoal community members on how to protect indigenous lands and resources. They teach communities how to become more environmentally sustainable by using the natural resources around them through animal management and plant maintenance.
Agri-Forest Agents actively advocate for the protection of indigenous lands. Agri-Forest Agents work to help indigenous communities understand and talk about the invasion of logging and mining operations on their land so they can take action and prevent the destruction of their lands. The organization also advocates on behalf of the interests of indigenous people by negotiating with government, businesses, and citizen sector organizations.
Why the need?
The Brazilian state of Acre, occupied mainly by indigenous people, contains some of Brazil’s most valuable natural resources. Lack of state-enforced regulation on extractive industries like mining and logging is threatening the land and the people that live on through pollution, eco-system destruction, and unsustainable extraction.
The Ashaninka tribe is one of the largest indigenous groups in South America and their land that is increasingly invaded by the logging industry. Ashaninka communities receive little support from the government and lack the tools to respond to this exploitation or defend themselves.
