Snowland Service Group
China
The Snowland Service Group promotes education, economic development, and policy for the Tibetan communities in the Qinghai Province, China.
Snowland Service Group Programs
Snowland Service Group (SSG) is the first and only non-government organization in its region recognized by the Chinese government. Snowland Service Group provides schools, vocational training, water sanitation facilities, health clinics, medical services, solar cookers, a cheese factory and many other goods and services to communities.
The Snowland Service Group has been successful in implementing school construction, sanitation, infrastructure, renewable energy, and education projects in over 258 villages in six counties. The Snowland Service Group has also supported 215 students with scholarships, allowing them to receive training to become teachers, doctors, scientists, and NGO leaders. In addition Snowland Service Group has built four primary schools in 2009 serving over 300 children.
Following the 2010 Yushu earthquake that affected many in the Qinghai Province, SSG responded by providing aid in the form of scholarships, educational support, and relief efforts.
Why the need?
Recent studies have shown that the lowest level of human development in China remains primarily in the Tibetan areas, where most families live isolated, with limited education and employment opportunities, and lacking basic healthcare. Only 10% of the population in Qinghai Province received a secondary education.
Issues of borders and land disputes between China and Tibetan communities began long ago. These issues combined with political differences and has caused a divide between China and Tibet. Due to the history of struggle between the two groups, Chinese and Tibetans, it is key for the Snowland Service Group to ensure cultural appropriateness and sensitivity, equal participation, and environment sustainability when dealing with either group.
In addition Snowland Service Group has been a leader in response to the 2010 earthquake that took nearly 2000 lives, caused over 10,000 injuries, and displaced many in the rural region of Yusha county of the Qinghai Province.
