Ashoka: Innovators for the Public
Amicale des Forestières du Burkina both empowers women and addresses issues of environmental sustainability through agriculture and business trainings.
Amicale des Forestières du Burkina Program
Amicale des Forestières du Burkina teaches women in communities across Burkina Faso about combining their vegetable gardens with wild tree nurseries to help improve the soil and increase their revenue because as trees sell for much more than the crops.
In addition, Amicale des Forestières du Burkina educates women on selling other parts of the crops and plants as sources for medicine for additional income. The women sell small trees to help rebuild areas where forests have been chopped or burned down.
Why the need?
Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world, as it is landlocked and lacks natural resources. Most of the population works in agriculture, but this employment is heavily dependent on the weather. Periodic droughts devastate the country’s crops and economy.
Most women work in gardens and sell wood, plants, and trees to earn a small amount of income and provide food for their families. Women across the country are struggling with increasing deforestation, rapid rise in food prices, and lack of options for crops and food choices. Children in particular struggle with malnourishment due to limited food options.
How Team Efforts Translate to Impact
100% of funds raised will support Amicale des Forestières du Burkina in educating women about issues of deforestation, species of trees, and ways to preserve and enrich the soil for crops by combining species of trees into crop growing gardens.
Funds will also go to support educating women about income generating projects such as leaves and fruits for food and medical purposes.
How Amicale des Forestières du Burkina Creates Sustainable Global Change
Amicale des Forestières du Burkina works to educate communities of women on issues of environmental sustainability and how they can support their families through agriculture, while still preserving their environment for future communities.
