Migrant Health Promotion Programs

Migrant Health Promotion works with migrant women living in colonias in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, to become educated in reproductive health. Coloinas are neighborhoods developed outside of city limits that are not recognized by the government. They lack many basic services usually provided by the local government. Migrant Health Promotion educates women in these communities on reproductive health education, leadership skills, and advocacy training necessary to access reproductive health services and make policy change.

Why the need?

Each year, 3 to 5 million farm workers and their families labor in fields and factories across the country to fill the grocery stores with fresh fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products. Many farm workers leave their permanent homes for months at a time to follow the crops.

Farm worker families earn low wages and endure job-related hazards, poor working and living conditions, long hours and isolation. Farm workers face more substantial health challenges than other groups, but have fewer resources and little or no access to health care, health education or other services. Farm workers tend to visit health providers only in emergencies and often do not receive routine or preventative health care. Specialized services, such as substance abuse treatment, mental health services and HIV education, prevention, and treatment are almost nonexistent.

How Team Efforts Translate to Impact

All funds raised will support La Voz Latina Project in Progreso, TX.  The La Voz Latina project equips women in the coloninas of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas with the reproductive health education, leadership skills, and advocacy training necessary to access reproductive health services and make policy change.

How the Migrant Health Promotion Creates Sustainable Global Change

For the migrant worker community, education and access to health care are vital, particularly maternal health, to  maintain their livelihood. Migrant Health Promotion works to empower these communities to receive the rights and health care they deserve now and for future generations.

Workers who have participated in the program teach others about the beneficial affects of personal health care.
