ISSUE: Child Mortality, Extreme Poverty, Education
GLOBAL PROJECT: Center for Youth Integration, Serbia
"We are most interested, of course, in the children and their quality of life. We know that the street children are our age and that in many ways they are just like us, yet that they lead very different, painful lives. We would like to know that we did something to better the lives of these children and that maybe, as a result of our efforts, a street child in Serbia has a better chance at an education and a happy life." – Shaker HS NGC Team
ACTION: The Team hosted a Film Night to educate their school and community about their project and issues of child mortality and extreme poverty and raise funds for their project. The Team created an amazing video (check it out below) to show at the beginning of the night. In the video the team educates their school about New Global Citizens, their project, and way people can get involved. By the end of the year the team raised $1,400 for Center of Youth Integration and educated 500 people about issues of street children in Serbia.

Academy of the Holy Cross
Kensington, MD
ISSUE: Child Mortality
GLOBAL PROJECT: The Smile Group
"Our team recognizes that we are privileged. We have the freedom, resources, and education to help people who have so much less than we do. We chose the Smile Group because of their dedication to supporting needy families financially, psychologically, and morally. I especially loved that they seem to treat the whole person, they don't just give out handouts. It's as simple is this: We believe it is unacceptable for us to continue on with our normal lives, while children around the world are living in such poor conditions." – Academy of the Holy Cross NGC Team
ACTION: The Team created the "Orange Ribbon Campaign" to raise funds and awareness about Child Mortality and the Smile Group. Orange is the awareness color for malnutrition. The team sold orange ribbons at their school for $1. They placed flyers around the school with facts and figures about child mortality. By the end of the Orange Ribbon Campaign, their school was covered with bright orange flyers and students wearing orange ribbons on their uniformed skirts. The team not only raised over $200 for the Smile Group, but they educated their entire school about Child Mortality.
